Overview
Refugees are defined and protected in international law. The 1951 Refugee Convention is a key legal document and defines a refugee as: "someone who is unable or unwilling to return to their country of origin owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion." By the end of 2017, there were 25.4 million refugee men, women and children registered across the world. The majority of refugees spend 12-18 years in a refugee camp before being resettled in another country.
How It All Began
After seeing the overwhelming needs, Berta and her volunteer team began to strategically develop programs, such as: English classes for Adults, tutoring for students, mentoring youth, bible studies, DES support/awareness, community engagement, field trip, sporting events, justo to name a few. Her commitment with these families enable them to assimilate the culture. Berta and her team knows that these families have great potential that have so much to offer to our communities and our culture.

In 2019, we were delighted to see Berta launch a new non-profit of her own as many refugee families in her initial program were displaced to west Phoenix by gentrifying neighborhoods and radical increases in rents. Today, as part of her legacy, our connections to refugee communities throughout Creighton and surrounding communities remain a fundamental part of what Creighton Community Foundation does, and we are delighted to experience the diversity, and assist families in transition and settling in our District.
Programs
We accomplished this vision through empowerment programs, authentic friendship, shared support and encouragement that result in mutual transformation. In partnership with schools, local churches and volunteers, we help unrooted people to find identity in the community, new opportunities, purpose and belonging.
Mentoring
A mentor is a friend, role model, confidant, and a nurturer of possibilities. All mentors have one-year commitment, and gather at least two times per month to guide each kids depending on their needs.
After-School Kids Club
Weekly tutoring sessions that helps kids with technology, entrepreneurship, skill building, life skills training for elementary through college age.
Tutoring
Tutors liaise with schools to help and monitor student's progress. Weekly gathering to help students develop study skills and overcome challenges.
Women's Empowerment
Help women with life skill training, such as: household budgeting, driver's learners permit prep, US citizenship prep, resume, job interviewing, English classes, and more.

Creighton School District boundaries encompass approximately the 202 highway to the south, 16th street to the west, Indian School road to the north, and 40th street to the east, with an extension between 32nd and 40th streets all the way to just north of Lincoln drive. About Us
Creighton Community Foundation was incorporated in March of 2013, and received Federal 501(c)3 status in April of 2015. We are a group of community leaders focused on equipping Creighton School District #14 in Phoenix, Arizona with the resources to deliver excellent educational services, in the most sustainable way possible, amidst our diverse urban Phoenix neighborhoods.
